This year we have introduced a Resilience Programme using the SPARK Intervention Programme. It builds on research findings from four relevant fields of study: cognitive-behavioural therapy, resilience, post-traumatic growth and positive psychology.
Using creative means to introduce otherwise complex psychological concepts, the programme introduces students to ‘parrots of perception’ – imaginary creatures representing common distortions of human cognition and thinking. It further teaches students how to challenge their interpretation of any life situation and consider other alternatives by putting their parrots ‘on trial’, understanding their automatic emotional responses and learning to control their non-constructive behavioural reactions.
Alongside, they are introduced to the skills of assertiveness and problem solving, and are helped to build their ‘resilience muscles’ through identifying their strengths, social support networks, sources of positive emotions and previous experiences of resilience.
